Tales from the Hills is a pair of Irish stories, transposed into a pair of short plays by noted Irish poets and playwrights, WB Yeats and JM Synge. Yeats’ verse tragedy Deirdre takes an ancient Irish legend, and explores it's tragic denoument in a very Greek style, all the while showing the influences of classical Japanese Noh theatre. Synge's raucous comedy In The Shadow of The Glen elaborates upon a story he said he had overheard while staying in a boarding house, in a naturalist comic style.
Like all good Modern plays, these shows explore the human above the specific, and regardless of the Irish setting, we meet these people as familiars to our modern world.
