Charlestown State Parks, the sister park to the Falls of the Ohio State Park, hosts its second annual festival to celebrate butterflies, and July is the perfect time to see them having abundant wildflowers that attract species. With three miles of roadside butterfly viewing and large fields, everyone can get a perfect view!
IUS entomologist Randy Hunt and park naturalists will be present to identify butterflies. We will have a photography scavenger hunt, arts and craft activities for children focused on butterflies. There will be hands-on activities, hikes and a butterfly release (not just monarchs — it will include swallowtails and other native species, too. Anabel Hopkins, with Indiana’s Arts in Parks program will be painting wildlife scenes and be available for Q & A throughout the event.
The Southern Indiana Butterfly Festival program will be at the Riverside Overlook near the boat ramp. Activities are free with regular park admission: $7 per vehicle, Indiana; $9 out-of-state; free with Indiana Parks Pass.
